Weekly Update

Autumn 1, Week 8

We’ve reached the end of the first half term of Year 4. The children have made some great progress over the last eight weeks and here’s a look at what we’ve been up to in this last week:

Maths
We have focused on subtraction this week progressing with using the written method to subtract with no exchanges, with one exchange and with more than one exchange.

English
In English, the children have written a short independent section of a diary entry based on Matilda’s first day at school. We really enjoyed using a clip from the original film as a stimulus.

Reading
In reading, we have come to the end of our study of The Iron Man. We have really developed our vocabulary, retrieval and inference skills as the unit has progressed. Yesterday, children attempted a three-mark inference question and demonstrated how far they have come.

Geography

In our first geography lesson in our new unit (Waterways), children used atlases to locate both the world’s oceans and the seas around the UK. We also started to look at why tides come in and go out ready for our next lesson.

Science
In science, we came to the end of our ‘States of Matter’ unit completing our end of unit quiz; children did really well with demonstrating their understanding particularly with the scientific terms used as materials move from solids to liquids to gases.

Spanish
In Spanish, the children demonstrated their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in our end of unit assessment on ‘presenting myself’.

Art
The children put the finishing touches to their Hokusai art and reflected on their efforts.

Computing

We investigated who owns a website and whether it is okay to use content (such as a picture) from a website without the owner’s permission.

PE

The children worked on their agility skills in different stations practising their hurdling, skipping and sprinting skills.

Special mentions this week went to Blake B and Maddison B in 4H, alongside Mia M and Franko M in 4P for their hard work and attitude to learning this week. Well done to you all!

Over the half term break, please encourage children to use TT Rock Stars to earn their dojo reward (60 mins minimum time between now and our return to school on Tuesday 4th November. Children must play on actual TTRS games for their time to count).

Thank you all for your support this half term and we look forward to seeing you back on Tuesday 4th November.
