End of Summer 2 Week 1 Messages and Updates

What a great start we've had to our final half term in year 5! The children have settled back into routines quickly and produced some great week this week.

Congratulations to our winners of special mentions awards this week: Lily, Tadisa, Jack and Lorissa.

In English this week, we have planned and started writing our own setting descriptions. The children have been great at including a range of features in their work.

In maths this week, we have enjoyed completing our decimals unit of work, checking our understanding with our end of unit test, seeing some of the best ever arithmetic test results before starting a brand new unit of work around negative numbers.

In guided reading this week, we have enjoyed getting towards the really exciting bit of Floodlands - we are refining our answers and speeding up how quickly we find answers to questions in preparation for our final round of assessments in a couple of weeks.

In geography this week, we looked at where we are in the world, starting with our town of Rotherham and gradually zooming out to our county, country and continent. We then had a brief look at the different symbols maps use to tell us where different places of interest can be found. Don't be surprised if the children start asking to use google maps on phones/tablets and showing you the different places of interest in your local area!

In R.E. this week, we started a new unit of work about the Sanatana Dharma (hinduism) faith. We considered how Brahman could be everywhere and in everything before thinking about the important people in our lives and how we can have different roles with them.

In D+T this week, we launched our new project. We are going to design and make a night light for younger children so this week we started by researching existing products.

In P.E., we enjoyed our first lessons in rounders.

In music, we launched our new unit of work on musical theatre and really enjoyed learning about the history of musicals and how they have changed over time.

Next week, we have some great things planned for the children. There are theatre performances, an online lesson with the famous Steve Backshall and a lesson on oral health as well as our regular lessons.
