End of Summer 1 Week 2 Key Messages and Updates

What a great week we have had in year 5 this week. Our week had many highlights and concluded with special mentions for Scarlett, Tyler, Yazan and Archie - congratulations to these superstars!

In English this week, we have been exploring the features we will need to use when we write our own biographies before studying a man called Kenton Cool. Ask the children to tell you some of the interesting things about him as he is a fascinating man.

In maths this week, we have been working hard to ensure we can use a protractor accurately when measuring angles as well as using known facts e.g. angles on a straight line and angles on a point to calculate the size of unknown angles without using a protractor.

In guided reading this week, we have enjoyed getting further into our novel 'Floodlands'. We are developing our vocabulary, improving our speed and accuracy when retrieving information from the text and developing the detail in our answers to inference questions as we build to our final set of assessments later this term.

In science this week, we have looked at the life cycles of mammals and how this is different for different types of mammals.

In PSHE this week, we have been looking at the positives and negatives of online communities - thinking about our own online behaviour and how we keep ourselves safe as well as how we can affect others with our own actions.

In computing this week, we have really enjoyed using the microbits again - this time we have learnt how to use the light meter in order to make a light-sensitive alarm.

In P.E. this week, we enjoyed our first attempt at bowling. There were some suspect actions but we improved as the session went on. We also enjoyed our second athletics lesson.

In history this week, we began our new unit of work around the Shang Dynasty, focussing to start with on when and where it was and comparing life then with life in modern day China.

In languages this week, we continued our unit of work on clothing - something the children are really enjoying.

In art this week, we worked on using different techniques when using watercolours - another great lesson which we really enjoyed.

As you can see, the week was packed with really enjoyable activities for the children.

As we move more towards the warmer weather, please remember to ensure that your child has a water bottle each day. On the sunnier days, sun cream and hats are also a really good idea.
