Weekly Update

Autumn 1, Week 2

Weekly Update

We’ve reached the end of our first full week back and it’s been a busy one. The children are continuing to adapt to a new year group and are working hard in lessons across the curriculum.

Here’s a look at what we’ve been learning this week.

Maths
In maths, we have developed our understanding of numbers up to 1,000 by moving onto numbers up to 10,000. We have demonstrated how to represent the numbers in different ways whilst also counting forwards and backwards in thousands.

English
As we continue to plan and prepare to write our first independent piece in Year 4, we have compared two different character descriptions this week, considering how each of the texts use the features required. We have also started to critique a poor example of a character description.

Reading
We have delved into Chapter 1 of The Iron Man focusing on our vocabulary, retrieval and inference skills throughout the week.

History

We became archaeologists in history this week and looked at some of the artefacts that have been found from the time when the Indus Valley civilisation was active. We then compared an Indus Valley toilet (yes, they had working drains back then!) to a toilet from nowadays to understand how advanced the Indus Valley people were in their thinking.

Science

Our first science unit in Year 4 looks at states of matter. We acted as particles in a solid, a liquid and a gas to understand how differently the particles behave in each. We also sorted some different items into their state of matter.

Spanish

Spanish started in Year 4 with a recap of our Year 3 phonics sounds followed by learning the sounds we will need for Year 4. Our first Spanish unit will begin next week.

PE
In PE, we focused on dribbling in our first football lesson using both the outstep and instep.

Computing

We learned how information passes around the World Wide Web and the role of networks and routers in this process.

Art

In art, we have looked at different ways of using line drawing including hatching and stippling.

Special Mentions

It is always difficult to choose children for special mentions but well done to this week’s choices for their achievements this week. Congratulations to Enoch A and Sophie O (4H), and Thomas B and Darcie F (4P). A big well done to you all.

Many thanks for your continued support.
